Interpretation (EN)

“ernsT ist das leBen…”

Despite its serious nature, the title, with its peculiar capitalization, may appear amusing at first glance. This reflects the inspiration behind the piece: double-bell instruments, where the performer alternates between different bells, akin to pressing the shift key to toggle between uppercase and lowercase letters. Just as “A” and “a” convey the same meaning but differ in form and function, the two bells produce distinct timbres from the same instrument, creating a captivating contrast.

The piece begins with a solemn and weighty choral, which gradually transitions into a playful and lively atmosphere through the sudden shifts introduced by the double-bell instruments. These unexpected changes bring a touch of humor and lightheartedness to the music.

Through this work, I aim to convey that even in serious art, moments of accidental joy or humor—like pressing the wrong key—can enhance the richness and diversity of the experience. Just as “a” and “A” are variations of the same letter, the blend of earnestness and whimsy does not diminish the essence of the music but rather adds to its multifaceted nature.
